Maitake: the beta-glucan one you can also cook with

Grifola frondosa

Start here. Maitake is the mushroom most associated with metabolic research, and the one where it is most important to be clear that the research is preclinical.

Maitake is hen of the woods, the clustered polypore at the base of old oaks. It is a genuinely good culinary mushroom, savoury and faintly peppery, which matters on this page: cooking with it is a better habit than dosing with it.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-D glucans. Beta-glucans are fermentable fibre, which is the mechanism most of the metabolic interest runs through.

The Maitake glucose research is in rodents, not people. Diabetic rats, insulin-resistant mice, prediabetic mice on isolated fractions. It is consistent and it is not a human result, and no amount of repetition online makes it one.

The human trial that does exist measured something else: 47 healthy adults over 60, eighteen weeks, a rise in natural killer cell activity and an improvement on a cognitive assessment (Jogi 2026). It used 50 g of whole mushroom in food rather than an extract, and only one of two strains produced the effect.

Cordyceps: the one measured on exercise capacity

Cordyceps militaris

Second, and the more directly useful of the two if what you actually want is to move more. That is the only lever on this page with a human trial behind it.

Cordyceps militaris is farmed and orange, harvested as a fruiting body, and not the wild caterpillar fungus it gets pictured beside. Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract tested to 30% beta-glucans.

Take it in the morning. Nothing about it is sedating and most people find it wasted late in the day.

If the goal behind landing on this page is body composition, the honest mechanism is activity rather than metabolism. Cordyceps is here because it was studied on exercise tolerance, not because it does anything to fat.

Lo que dice la investigación

Three weeks of daily supplementation was associated with a longer time to exhaustion and a higher ventilatory threshold, though a single dose did nothing (Hirsch 2017). It tested a six-mushroom blend, so it points at a direction rather than at one species.

A 2025 review of the human work asks for larger studies on better-characterised preparations. Nothing in that literature is about weight.

¿Cuánto falta para que funcione?

  1. Week 1 Cordyceps in the morning. Maitake whenever, or cooked into something.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3 The Cordyceps exercise trial ran three weeks. Earliest sensible checkpoint.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8 If either suits you it should be evident by now.
  4. Ongoing Daily. These work alongside what you eat and how much you move, which is where the real leverage sits.

Preguntas frecuentes

Will these help me lose weight?

These are not fat burners and we would not sell them as one. Cordyceps has a human trial showing people could exercise longer before exhaustion, and doing more is what actually shifts body composition.

Does Maitake lower blood sugar?

The Maitake glucose research is preclinical so far and it is consistent, with rodent work pointing the same direction across several studies. It is a promising area and human trials are the next step. Anything presenting it as a proven human result is getting ahead of the evidence.

What is the D-fraction I keep reading about?

It is the name the literature uses for Maitake beta-glucan preparations. It describes the polysaccharide fraction rather than naming a separate ingredient. We publish a measured beta-glucan percentage instead, because that is the number we can verify batch to batch.

Which one should I take?

Cordyceps if you want the one with a human trial behind it and your goal is being able to do more. Maitake if you cook, because the powder genuinely earns a place in the kitchen. Both if you want, one in the morning and the other whenever.

Can I take these with diabetes medication?

Ask your doctor. That is not us being evasive: blood sugar is exactly the area where interactions matter, and nobody should be answering that question for you without knowing your prescription.

How long before I judge them?

Three to eight weeks of daily use. The Cordyceps exercise trial ran three weeks and the Maitake trial eighteen. Neither is fast and neither is meant to be.

Forty-seven healthy adults aged 60 and over ate bread containing 50 g of maitake daily for eighteen weeks. One strain produced a significant improvement on the Japanese Montreal Cognitive Assessment against placebo, and natural killer cell activity rose in the same group and tracked the cognitive score. Two strains were tested and one moved the needle, which tells researchers exactly where to look next.

  • Cordyceps militaris improves tolerance to high-intensity exercise after acute and chronic supplementationHirsch KR, Smith-Ryan AE, Roelofs EJ, Trexler ET, Mock MG

Three weeks of daily supplementation was associated with a longer time to exhaustion, a higher ventilatory threshold and a higher VO2max; after one week, only time to exhaustion had improved. Read it for what it tested: the supplement was PeakO2, a six-species blend of mycelial biomass grown on oats, so nothing here is attributable to Cordyceps alone, and the three-week result comes from the 10 of 28 participants who continued that far. An encouraging early signal in a field that deserves a bigger trial.
