Reishi: the one with a six-month human trial

Ganoderma lucidum

Start here. This is the best-matched trial we can point at anywhere on the site: people with mildly raised liver enzymes, six months, and liver markers among the outcomes.

Reishi is the hard, lacquered bracket fungus of the Chinese materia medica. It is genuinely bitter, which is the triterpene fraction, and it is why most people take it in capsules.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-glucans. Take it in the evening, an hour or two before bed.

Ce que dit la recherche

Forty-two adults with mildly raised liver enzymes took 225 mg of a triterpenoid and polysaccharide-enriched Ganoderma lucidum or placebo for six months in a double-blind crossover design. Total antioxidant capacity, thiols and glutathione rose, markers of oxidative damage fell, and the two liver enzymes measured came down by 42% and 27% (Chiu 2017).

Worth reading carefully: the preparation was enriched for triterpenes and polysaccharides rather than being a plain extract, and 42 people is not a large trial. It still ran six months in the people most likely to notice a change, which is longer and cleaner than most of what gets cited in this category.

Chaga: the antioxidant one, on laboratory work

Inonotus obliquus

Second, and ranked below its reputation. Chaga is the mushroom most associated with liver support online and the one with the least human evidence for it.

Chaga is the black conk on a birch trunk. It never forms a fruiting body, so we extract the wild-harvested conk, which is where the actives sit.

Its colour comes from melanin and from betulinic acid derivatives taken up from the birch. It is the most drinkable extract we sell, which for a daily habit counts for a lot.

A 2024 review in Mycology maps the modern literature: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activity, almost all of it in laboratory and animal models.

Human trials are the natural next step, and what Chaga brings today is a consistent laboratory picture, centuries of daily use across the boreal north, and a tested certificate on every batch.

Turkey Tail: the gut one, which is a liver argument too

Trametes versicolor

Third, and the indirect entry. The gut and the liver are connected by the portal vein, so a prebiotic argument is a real one, just a longer one.

Turkey Tail is the banded bracket on dead logs everywhere in the northern hemisphere. Ours is hot water, 10:1, fruiting body only, tested to 50% beta-D glucans, the highest in our range.

The connection to this page runs through the gut. Everything absorbed from the intestine reaches the liver first, so what happens to the microbiome is not unrelated to the liver. That is a chain of reasoning rather than a finding, and we have written it as one.

Ce que dit la recherche

Twenty-four healthy volunteers were randomised to Turkey Tail polysaccharopeptide, amoxicillin or nothing, with stool sampled over eight weeks. The Turkey Tail arm showed clear, consistent prebiotic changes to the microbiome (Pallav 2014).

That trial measured the gut, not the liver. We are ranking Turkey Tail third and labelling the link as indirect rather than promoting it on an association.

Combien de temps avant que ça fonctionne ?

  1. Week 1 Reishi in the evening. Chaga whenever, as a hot drink.
  2. Weeks 2 to 8 Nothing you will feel. These are slow, everyday extracts.
  3. Months 3 to 6 The Chiu trial ran six months and that is the window its results came from.
  4. Ongoing Daily rather than as a course.

Foire aux questions

Is there real human research on mushrooms and the liver?

On Reishi, yes, and it is better than most: a six-month double-blind placebo-controlled crossover in 42 adults with mildly raised liver enzymes, where those enzymes fell by 42% and 27% alongside improvements in antioxidant markers. On Chaga there is none in humans, despite its reputation. The ranking on this page follows that.

Is this a liver detox?

Your liver does the detoxifying, which is why supporting it day to day is the more useful idea. Reishi has a six-month double-blind trial behind it, which is a longer and cleaner run than most supplement research manages.

Why is Chaga only second when everyone recommends it for the liver?

Because Reishi has a six-month double-blind trial in adults with mildly raised liver enzymes where those enzymes fell by 42% and 27%. That is an unusually strong result and it earns the top spot. Chaga is second on a consistent laboratory picture and centuries of daily use.

Can I take these with medication?

Ask your doctor first, and mean it on this page in particular. The liver processes most medication, so anything you add is worth checking rather than assuming.

Which one if I only want one?

Reishi, in the evening, on the strength of the trial. If you would rather have something you enjoy drinking daily and you accept that the evidence is preclinical, Chaga.

How long before I judge it?

The trial ran six months. That is the honest timescale here, and longer than anywhere else on this site.
