Reishi: the evening extract with the research

Ganoderma lucidum

The one with the trial literature, and the only extract we sell with a time of day attached to it. Take it an hour or two before bed.

Reishi is the hard, lacquered bracket fungus of the Chinese materia medica, where it is lingzhi. It is genuinely bitter, which is why most people take it in capsules rather than in a drink.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-glucans. Hot water decoction is the traditional preparation and the method behind nearly all of the human research.

The traditional literature describes it as calming rather than sedating. It is not a sleeping tablet and it does not behave like one.

Ce que dit la recherche

Reishi has the largest human trial literature of any mushroom we sell. A 2025 systematic review pooled 17 clinical trials across 971 participants and found significant improvements in BMI, serum creatinine, glutathione peroxidase and resting heart rate.

The same review rated the certainty of that evidence low and asked for better-designed studies. Neither of those sentences cancels the other, and the paper is linked at the foot of the page.

Chaga: the drink itself

Inonotus obliquus

Here because the ritual matters more than the pharmacology. Chaga is the extract people actually look forward to, which is why they keep taking it.

Chaga is the most drinkable thing in our range, dark, faintly bitter and slightly vanilla, closer to a weak coffee than to a mushroom. It was brewed as a tea and drunk daily across Siberia and the boreal north.

It never forms a fruiting body, so what we extract is the wild-harvested conk, a dense mass of fungal tissue and oxidised birch wood. That is the part that carries the actives, and any brand offering a Chaga fruiting body is describing something that does not exist.

Its beta-glucan figure is 10%, the lowest in our range, and we publish it rather than round it up.

Ce que dit la recherche

A 2024 review in Mycology maps the modern Chaga literature, which is largely laboratory and animal work on antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity. None of it is about relaxation.

Chaga is on this page for what it is: a caffeine-free hot drink at the end of the day that people enjoy enough to keep making. That is a smaller claim than you will read elsewhere and a more honest one.

Combien de temps avant que ça fonctionne ?

  1. Week 1 Reishi an hour or two before bed. Chaga in the mug where the evening coffee used to be.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4 The routine tends to establish itself before anything else does, which is most of the value.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8 The window the Reishi trials use. If it suits you it should be clear by now.
  4. Ongoing Daily rather than on bad nights.

What customers report. Individual experience varies; none of this is a clinical claim.

Foire aux questions

What is the difference between this page and your stress page?

This one is about the routine, the hour before bed and what you drink during it. The stress page is about stress itself and it ranks the same two mushrooms differently, with Lion's Mane added because of a human finding on self-reported stress. If you want help with how you feel during the day, start there.

Reishi or Chaga?

Reishi if you want the one with the research behind it and you do not mind swallowing capsules. Chaga if you want something to drink. A lot of people take both, and they do different jobs: one is the extract, the other is the ritual.

Does Reishi actually relax you?

The traditional literature describes Reishi as calming, and that is what people report: it becomes easier to stop. It is not a sedative and it will not knock you out, which is precisely why it fits an evening routine rather than replacing one.

Is Chaga caffeine-free?

Completely. It tastes like a weak coffee and contains no caffeine at all, which is the entire reason it works as an evening drink.

When should I take them?

Reishi an hour or two before bed. Chaga whenever, though the evening is the point on this page. Neither is something to take once and assess the same night.

How long before I notice anything?

Four weeks of daily use for Reishi. Chaga is a drink you either enjoy or you do not, and you will know that on day one.

  • The nutritional significance of Ganoderma lucidum on human health: a GRADE-assessed systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trialsJafari A, Mardani H, Mirzaei Fashtali Z, Arghavan B

The widest survey of the Reishi literature: 17 clinical trials covering 971 participants, at doses from 200 to 11,200 mg a day. Pooled analysis found significant improvements in BMI, serum creatinine, glutathione peroxidase and resting heart rate. Many other markers did not move, and the reviewers rate the certainty of the underlying trials as low and call for better-designed studies, which is the usual state of a field this active and this young.
