What is Chaga?

Chaga is the black, cracked mass that grows out of a wound on a living birch. It looks like burnt wood and it is hard enough that it was traditionally broken up with an axe. Inside it is a deep amber orange, which is the first clue that this is nothing like the fungus you find on a forest floor.
