Mushrooms for breathing and stamina

Cordyceps militaris leads, for a specific reason: in a human trial, three weeks of a blend containing it was associated with a higher ventilatory threshold, the point in exercise where breathing climbs sharply. Agarikon is second, with the longest written record of any mushroom we sell, described by Dioscorides in the first century. Both are 10:1 hot water extracts, tested to at least 30% beta-glucans.

Cordyceps: the one with a measured breathing finding

Cordyceps militaris

Start here. Cordyceps militaris is the only mushroom we sell with a human result that is genuinely about breathing rather than about immunity.

Cordyceps militaris is farmed and orange, harvested as a fruiting body. It is not the wild caterpillar fungus, Cordyceps sinensis, which is collected by hand in the Himalaya and priced accordingly.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-glucans. Take it in the morning: nothing about it is sedating and most people find it wasted late in the day.

If you are taking it around training, note that the trial used three weeks of daily supplementation rather than a dose before the session. It is a habit, not a pre-workout.

What the research says

Three weeks of daily supplementation was associated with a longer time to exhaustion and a higher ventilatory threshold, the point at which breathing rate climbs sharply during effort (Hirsch 2017). A single dose produced nothing.

Two caveats. It tested a six-mushroom blend, so it points at a direction rather than at one species. And the trial most often quoted against Cordyceps tested Cs-4, which is Cordyceps sinensis, a different species, and found no endurance benefit (Parcell 2004). We keep that paper on the page with the species labelled.

Agarikon: the old one, on tradition

Laricifomes officinalis

Second, and honestly ranked. Agarikon has the longest written record of any mushroom we sell and no modern human trials whatsoever.

Agarikon is a chalky white bracket that grows high on old conifers, slowly, over decades. It depends on genuinely old forest and has largely disappeared where that forest has been logged.

It is wildcrafted rather than certified organic, because it cannot be farmed. Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract tested to 30% beta-D glucans, which for a scarce mushroom is the number that matters most, because scarcity is exactly when products get padded.

What the research says

Agarikon has a chemistry unlike anything else in the range: a distinctive family of lanostane triterpenoids and chlorinated coumarins that researchers have taken a serious interest in.

It is also the longest documented mushroom in the Western record. Dioscorides catalogued it in the first century and it stayed in European apothecary practice for fifteen hundred years, prized above all for the chest and the breath.

How long until it works

  1. Week 1 Cordyceps in the morning with food. A single dose does nothing, so week one is groundwork.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3 The trial that found an effect ran three weeks. This is the earliest sensible checkpoint.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8 If it suits you, this is where people report it most consistently, usually as less of a dip rather than more of a peak.
  4. Ongoing Daily rather than before sessions.

What customers report. Individual experience varies; none of this is a clinical claim.

Frequently asked

What does ventilatory threshold mean?

It is the point during exercise where your breathing rate stops rising gradually and starts climbing sharply. A higher threshold means you can work harder before that happens. In the Hirsch 2017 trial, three weeks of daily supplementation containing Cordyceps militaris was associated with a higher one, along with a longer time to exhaustion.

Will this help with a lung condition?

No, and this page is not about that. These are foods taken for exercise tolerance and general wellbeing. If you have a diagnosed respiratory condition, the people to speak to are your doctors, and nothing here should factor into that.

Is Cordyceps a pre-workout?

Not really. In the trial, a single dose before exercise did nothing at all; the effect came after three weeks of daily use. Treat it as a habit rather than something you take thirty minutes before training.

Is this the caterpillar fungus?

No. We sell Cordyceps militaris, which is farmed and harvested as a fruiting body. The caterpillar fungus is Cordyceps sinensis, a different species that costs more per gram than gold. That distinction matters on this page, because the trial most often cited against Cordyceps was run on sinensis.

Why is Agarikon on this page if it has no research?

Because it has the longest documented record of any mushroom we sell for exactly this use. Dioscorides catalogued it in the first century and it held its place in European apothecary practice for fifteen hundred years, prized above all for the chest and the breath.

When should I take Cordyceps?

In the morning. Nothing about it is sedating and most people find it does nothing useful taken late.
