Even though the label may say "mushroom," you should look at the Supplement Facts panel. For example, does it say Reishi mushroom, Reishi mushroom mycelium, or Reishi mycelium? Some products list the Latin name, Ganoderma Lucidum, without mentioning mushroom or mycelium.
Honest companies will reveal if the product is mycelium and will state in the "Other Ingredients" if there is grain or myceliated grain. Herbal products are required to state the "plant part" and any other unrelated materials present.
Some companies selling mycelium products will have the word "mushroom" everywhere on the label, website, and literature, which can obscure the fact that the product is low-potency mycelium on grain.
MOG is what commercial mushroom growers call "grain spawn," which is cheap to produce. Unfortunately, mycelium grown on grain or rice contains minimal amounts of the important compounds found in medicinal mushrooms.
Myceliated grain is inexpensive but lacks medicinal compounds, making it, gram for gram, one of the most expensive products in the market due to its low potency.
While mushroom powders are superior to MOG powders, they are still less potent than concentrated extracts.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has used mushrooms and herbs for thousands of years, typically uses tea as a simple water extract, boiling herbs for long periods to extract medicinal compounds. A hot water extract concentrates mushrooms and makes them more bioavailable.
A steam extraction, however, does not make medicinal compounds bioavailable like hot water extraction. Alcohol and water are used together when some important compounds, like Reishi or Chaga triterpenoids, are not water soluble.
Most medicinal mushrooms are known for their active polysaccharides, such as beta-D-glucans, and some, like Reishi, also have triterpenoid compounds.
Check whether these compounds are listed and quantified. Ensure the company can support these claims with actual testing documentation. Beware of companies listing multiple "active" compounds without testing results.
Also, be cautious of high polysaccharide numbers, as polysaccharides can simply be starch (alpha glucan), a major component of grain often found in mycelium products.
Ensure it is Certified Organic.
Mushrooms can concentrate pesticides and heavy metals from the soil, so they must be grown under Organic conditions. Look for certifications like USDA Organic, NOP, or others. Remember, "Natural" does not mean Organic.
Some companies claim their product includes “all stages” or is a “unique combination” of mushrooms and mycelium, calling it "full spectrum." However, mushrooms and mycelium are made of similar tissues with important differences.
Mushrooms are more complex and have more medicinal properties. Look for companies that disclose the percentage of each fungal part. Some products contain only 10% mushroom or don't even state the ratio.
Mushrooms are more expensive to grow but provide more value. Also, there are two methods for growing mycelium:
Solid Fermentation: Grown on grains or rice, where up to 70% of the product is a non-medicinal medium.
Liquid Fermentation: Grown in liquid with supportive nutrients, resulting in 100% mycelium with zero filler.
Our products are either a mix of Organic Fruiting Bodies and Liquid Fermentation Mycelium or Powerblend with pure Liquid Fermentation Mycelium. We clearly state the Beta D-glucan percentages on all packages!
A full spectrum mushroom product typically means all the major components of the mushroom are present, with a profile matching published research or government databases.
If the product is a mushroom extract, full spectrum means the naturally occurring components are present in approximately the same ratio as in the mushroom.
Mycelium grown on grain cannot be considered full spectrum, as the addition of grain negates the claim. Our products are 100% naturally produced mushrooms, offering the true definition of Full Spectrum.
The FDA clearly states in Compliance Policy Guide, Section 585.525, that mycelium products cannot be labeled as mushrooms. However, many producers use "mushroom" in their sales materials, misleading consumers and going against FDA regulations. Be sure to verify product labeling
Medicinal mushrooms are considered powerful natural healing substances and are classified as "Adaptogens," supporting the body to heal and balance itself.
Unlike isolated ingredients in typical supplements, medicinal mushrooms are consumed in a whole state, where each component synergistically enhances others. This ensures a high level of bioavailability when properly grown and processed.
Mushrooms are complex organisms that contain numerous bioactive nutrients and antioxidants. Recent research highlights their benefits, including a potent antioxidant called L-Ergothioneine (ERGO), which supports the immune system more efficiently than other antioxidants like beta-carotene or vitamins C and E.
