Best mushrooms for immune support

Start with Turkey Tail: every batch is tested to at least 50% beta-D glucans, the highest figure we sell. Maitake is second, with a randomised trial on immune response in healthy adults. Reishi is third and the most studied mushroom in our range, then Chaga, the antioxidant one, and Agarikon, the rare wildcrafted one. All five are 10:1 hot water extracts. A serving is 1,660 mg of powder or 900 mg in capsules.

Turkey Tail: the highest beta-glucan content we sell

Trametes versicolor

Start here. Turkey Tail is tested to 50% beta-D glucans, the highest figure in our range, and it is the only mushroom on this page with a randomised trial in healthy people rather than in patients.

Turkey Tail is the banded bracket fungus on every dead log in the northern hemisphere. It is far too tough to eat, which is why it has always been prepared as a decoction, and that is exactly what our extract is: hot water, 10:1, fruiting body only.

The 50% beta-D glucan figure is the reason it leads this page. Reishi and Maitake test at 30%, Chaga at 10%. If you are buying a mushroom for its polysaccharide content, this is where the number is highest, and it is measured on our own batches rather than quoted from a paper.

What the research says

There is a randomised trial in healthy volunteers, which is rare in this category. Twenty-four healthy people were randomised to polysaccharopeptide from Turkey Tail, to amoxicillin, or to nothing, and their stool was sampled seven times over eight weeks. The Turkey Tail arm showed clear and consistent microbiome changes consistent with prebiotic activity (Pallav 2014, Beth Israel Deaconess and Harvard).

The caveat that travels with it: PSP is an isolated fraction, not the whole extract we sell. You will also see Turkey Tail cited alongside a large oncology literature from Japan and China. That work uses pharmaceutical-grade fractions under medical supervision and it is not what is in a supplement, so we leave it out.

Maitake: the one with an immune finding in healthy older adults

Grifola frondosa

The pick if you want a mushroom you can also cook with. Maitake is a genuinely good culinary species, and it is the other 30% beta-glucan extract on this page.

Maitake is hen of the woods, the big clustered polypore at the base of old oaks. Unlike most of this page it is a mushroom you can actually cook, savoury and faintly peppery, and the powder goes into stock or eggs as easily as into a drink.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-D glucans. The studied fraction is usually called the D-fraction in the literature, which is a description of its beta-glucan rather than a separate ingredient.

What the research says

A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in healthy older adults reported a rise in natural killer cell activity. Forty-seven Japanese adults aged 60 and over ate bread containing 50 g of maitake daily for eighteen weeks. NK activity rose in one arm and tracked a cognitive score in the same group (Jogi 2026).

Two things belong with that. It used 50 g of whole mushroom in food rather than a 10:1 extract, and the effect was strain-dependent: the trial ran two maitake strains and only one produced it.

Reishi: the most-studied of the five

Ganoderma lucidum

The one with the largest body of human trials, and the only one on this page you take at night. Choose it if sleep and stress are part of why you feel run down.

Reishi is the hard, lacquered bracket fungus of the Chinese materia medica, and it is genuinely bitter, which is why most people take it in capsules.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract from fruiting bodies, tested to 30% beta-D glucans. Hot water decoction is the traditional preparation and the method behind nearly all of the human research.

Take it in the evening. It is the only extract on this page with a time of day attached to it, and taking it in the morning is the usual way to decide it does nothing.

What the research says

Reishi has the largest human trial literature of any mushroom we sell. A 2025 systematic review pooled 17 clinical trials across 971 participants and found significant improvements in BMI, serum creatinine, glutathione peroxidase and resting heart rate.

The same review rated the certainty of that evidence low and asked for better-designed trials. Both halves are true, and the paper is linked at the foot of the page so you can read it yourself.

Chaga: the one you drink rather than dose

Inonotus obliquus

The practical pick. Chaga is the only extract here that most people genuinely enjoy drinking, and an extract you actually take beats one you do not.

Chaga is the black, cracked mass on a birch trunk. It never forms a fruiting body, so what we extract is the conk, a dense mass of fungal tissue and oxidised birch wood. Any brand selling a Chaga fruiting body is describing something that does not exist.

It is the most drinkable thing in the range, dark and faintly vanilla, closer to a weak coffee than to a mushroom. It was traditionally drunk daily through the winter across Siberia and the boreal north.

Its beta-glucan figure is 10%, the lowest here, and we publish it rather than round it up. Chaga is not a high beta-glucan species and a Chaga claiming 40% is worth questioning.

What the research says

A 2024 review in Mycology maps the modern Chaga literature: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activity, almost all of it laboratory and animal work.

Human trials are the natural next step, and Chaga arrives with something few ingredients can match: several centuries of continuous daily use across Siberia and the boreal north, and a batch certificate you can open and read.

Agarikon: the rare one, on tradition rather than trials

Laricifomes officinalis

For the collector, or for someone who wants the oldest documented mushroom in the range. Ranked last because it has no human research, not because it is a lesser product.

Agarikon is a chalky white bracket that grows high on old conifers, slowly, over decades. It depends on genuinely old forest, and where that forest has been logged it has largely gone with it.

It is wildcrafted rather than certified organic, because it cannot be farmed. Every other mushroom on this page is cultivated, which is what makes certification possible. We say so on the pack rather than printing a seal it has not earned.

Ours is a 10:1 hot water extract tested to 30% beta-D glucans, the same figure as Reishi and Maitake. Scarcity is exactly the condition under which products get padded, so that measured number matters more here than anywhere else.

What the research says

Agarikon is one of the most interesting mushrooms in modern mycology. Researchers have isolated a distinctive family of lanostane triterpenoids and chlorinated coumarins found in very few other fungi, and the human work is a direction worth watching.

Few things in a supplement cabinet have been trusted this long. Dioscorides catalogued it in the first century, Pliny wrote about it, and it held its place in European apothecary practice for the next fifteen hundred years. Nothing stays in use that long by accident.

How long until it works

  1. Week 1 Any time of day, with or without food. Reishi in the evening if that is the one you chose.
  2. Weeks 2 to 4 These are everyday extracts rather than ones with a noticeable onset. Consistency matters more than dose.
  3. Weeks 4 to 8 The window the human trials use. This is the earliest honest point to judge whether one suits you.
  4. Ongoing Taken daily rather than as a course. Turkey Tail is the one our customers stay on longest.

What customers report. Individual experience varies; none of this is a clinical claim.

Frequently asked

Which mushroom is best for immune support?

Turkey Tail, on the numbers. It carries the highest measured beta-D glucan content we sell at 50%, against 30% for Maitake and Reishi and 10% for Chaga, and it is the only one on this page with a randomised trial in healthy people rather than in patients. Maitake is the next choice, and it has the advantage of being a mushroom you can also cook with.

Should I take more than one?

Most people take one. If you want to combine, Turkey Tail and Maitake are the sensible pairing because they work through the same beta-glucan fraction from different sources. Reishi is the one to add if sleep and stress are part of the picture, and it goes in the evening.

What is a beta-glucan and why do you keep publishing the percentage?

Beta-glucans are the polysaccharides that almost every immune claim made for a mushroom traces back to. The percentage is the only honest way to compare two products, and it is checkable. Watch for a "polysaccharide" figure quoted instead, because starch is a polysaccharide and grain substrate inflates that number without contributing any beta-glucan.

Is there real human research behind any of this?

Yes, and the depth varies by mushroom, which is exactly why this page ranks them. Turkey Tail has a randomised trial in healthy volunteers. Reishi has 17 randomised trials pooled across 971 people. Maitake has a placebo-controlled trial in healthy older adults. Chaga and Agarikon bring centuries of documented use and a distinctive chemistry. Every paper is linked at the foot of the page.

When should I take them?

Any time of day, with one exception: Reishi belongs in the evening. The others have no time attached to them, so take them whenever you will actually remember.

How long before I should judge it?

Four to eight weeks of daily use. The Turkey Tail microbiome trial ran eight weeks and the Maitake trial eighteen. None of these is something you assess the morning after.
